Programme description

Understand the principles of investments and financial markets from eminent faculty at the Indian School of Business and renowned industry experts.

Overview

This programme will help you build a career in investment management, or prepare for higher education in finance. It will further enable you to efficiently manage your personal finances. You will learn about financial statements, common filings of firms, basics of the investment process, and trading strategies. Over a 16-week period, you will build a sound understanding of two trading strategies that work in emerging markets - Piotroski F -score and Post earnings announcement drift (PEAD). You will also learn about efficient market hypotheses, market anomalies and evaluating investment performance.

Post completion of this programme, you will be prepared for a career in roles such as investment manager, portfolio manager, risk analyst, research manager, and financial analyst. You will be able to understand financial markets and evaluate the performance and timing of a mutual fund.

Course 1 of 3

Investment Basics (Week 1 to Week 6)

Overview

The purpose of this course is to equip you with the knowledge required to comprehend the financial statements of a company and understand various transactions that take place in the stock market. Later on, you will learn general concepts of financial markets. You will see the difference between primary and secondary markets and learn about markets for different products. After completing course 1, you will have a much stronger background in financial markets. This course is designed to help anyone with very little or no finance background learn the basics of investments.

How to come up with Investment Ideas? (Week 7 to Week 12)

Overview

In the first part of this course, you will learn how to read an academic paper. For every strategy, first, you will be introduced to the original research and then how to implement the strategy.

The first strategy, Piotroski's F -score will be discussed in detail. You will be taught how to calculate the F - Score and how to use this score in a strategy. This is followed by the next strategy, Post earnings announcement drift (PEAD). This course will also provide you back test results for all the strategies in developed and emerging markets. You will also be taught scientific ways of back testing without succumbing to either look ahead (or) survival bias.

Stock Valuation and Investment Risks (Week 13 to Week 16)

Overview

This course which teach you the concepts of risk and expected return. This presents an overview of the basic concepts and techniques used to construct financial portfolios. We will also look at understanding and interpreting major portfolio management and risk concepts. You will be introduced to the concept of risk-return and how to evaluate the performance of your investment based on that.

In the second part, the course integrates learning from the previous courses and guides you on building a portfolio of strategies and integrating it into funds. There are concepts on how to measure the performance of your portfolios. You will be taught ways of measuring the contribution of a strategy to a portfolio in terms of risk and return.

You will be able to appreciate the consequences of including a strategy in a new as well as an existing portfolio
